Weather-proof Travel
Wintery road conditions exist during the coldest parts of the year in South Tyrol, especially at higher elevations.
To ensure that you and your family travel safely, make sure you equip your vehicle with snow chains and winter tyres before leaving home.
Only cars with winter tyres and fitted snow chains (or similar officially approved equipment) are permitted to drive on South Tyrol’s roads when there’s snow, slush or ice. From 15 November to 15 April on the Brennerautobahn motorway A22 between Brennero/Brenner and Affi as well as within the city of Bolzano/Bozen, cars must be fitted with winter equipment, irrespective of whether wintery conditions prevail.
- All vehicles must be equipped with winter tyres or appropriate equipment (such as snow chains or similar officially approved equipment).
- There is also a ban on motorcycles and mopeds in Bolzano in wintery conditions.
- Our neighbours in Austria demand that winter equipment be fitted even earlier from 1 November.
- Check the latest travel information regarding the winter closures of South Tyrolean Alpine passes before setting off.
