South Tyrol Underground – Inside the Mountains
If you are interested in mines and enjoy hiking, a hiking tour of the Schneeberg/Monteneve mountain between Passeiertal valley and Ridnauntal valley is worthwhile. Once one of Tyrol's most important silver, lead and zinc mining areas is located there at 2,355 m above sea level, at the mine and former mining village of Sankt Martin/S. Martino. Miners lived and worked here under extreme conditions from the Middle Ages until 1967.
In 1996 the St. Ignaz gallery of the former copper mine in Prettau/Predoi in the Ahrntal valley was opened to the public as a demonstration mine. Equipped with a helmet and rain jacket, your customers can take the mine train one kilometre into the mine. A climate tunnel is located about 1,100 metres inside the mountain and is meant to be a place of peace, relaxation and recreation.
A guided tour of the construction site in Mauls/Mules gives visitors the opportunity to get to know the Brennero Base Tunnel project up close. The tour starts at the information point in the fortress of Franzensfeste/Fortezza. After an introduction, your customers will be equipped with safety boots, helmets and vests, taken to the construction site in Mauls by minibuses and led into the tunnel. Guided tours of the construction site in Mauls are possible on Fridays at 10.00 a.m. and at 2.00 p.m. by appointment.
The western part of the region can also be explored underground. There are no mines here, but several bunkers dating from the Second World War that formed part of the Alpine Wall fortifications. Worth seeing is the Gampen Bunker in the Deutschnonsberg area with its mineral collection and photo gallery dedicated to local history, as well as the Bunker Mooseum in Hinterpassier valley. In addition to the permanent exhibition on the settlement of the area and its contemporary history, your guests will find an outdoor area leading towards the nature park with ibexes. In the upper Vinschgau valley, large bunkers such as Bunker No. 20 at the source of the Etsch River invite visitors on a voyage of discovery.
