South Tyrol and Wine

South Tyrol may have a comparatively small growing area for wine, but the unique variety and character of the wines grown here make all the difference. Nowhere else in Italy are twenty different grape varieties cultivated and this on just 5,300 hectares of land that produce 350,000 hectolitres of wine on an annual basis.

White grape varieties, which account for 55% of the grape-growing area in South Tyrol, are harvested to make distinctive fine wines. For more than 100 years, classic and regional red grape varieties, in addition to the two autochthonous varieties Vernatsch and Lagrein, have been cultivated here and account for nearly 45% of the grape-growing area in South Tyrol.

The best place to get information about South Tyrolean wines is from the winegrowers themselves! Visit a vineyard, a wine cellar or take part in a tasting at a wine parlour... everywhere in South Tyrol there are opportunities to interact with winegrowers and to sample the fruits of their labours and expertise. Learn what goes into winemaking, gain insights into working on a vineyard, and even learn a few wine-growing secrets along the way. Your guests can experience the beauty and fascination of wine and grape cultivation and experience vineyards for themselves. The countless wine educational trails and paths in the region’s many winegrowing areas provide valuable information and insights into winegrowing culture in South Tyrol as well as the opportunity to sample some delicious South Tyrolean wines www.altoadigewines.com/en/experiencing-wine/hiking.html.

Bikes are a great way for your guests to visit the vineyards. Three bike paths lead along the South Tyrolean Wine Road through the province’s largest wine-growing region. These cycle routes are flat for the most part and lead from Bolzano/Bozen, Kaltern/Caldaro and Kurtatsch/Cortaccia past medieval residences and castles through vineyards toward the various wineries www.altoadigewines.com/en/experiencing-wine/bicycling.html
