Authentic Törggelen in South Tyrol

In South Tyrol, the traditional Törggelen custom takes place every year from the beginning of October to the end of November. More than 20 companies have joined the new initiative Authentic Törggelen intiative, which will officially open the "Törggele Season" on Saturday, October 6, 2018 with the traditional "Keschtnfeuer" fire ritual.

The name of this ancient custom – Törggelen – is derived from the word torculum, Latin for winepress. This tradition originated in the rural inns (Buschenschank) of the Eisacktal Valley. Some of the taverns participating in the Authentic Törggelen initiative have also been awarded the "Red Rooster" farm holiday seal of quality. These offer only home-grown produce, such as young wine and local chestnuts.

These taverns are located not only along the Eisacktal Valley Chestnuts trail, but also in the wine and chestnut growing areas along the South Tyrol Wine Route, in the surroundings of Bolzano/Bozen and Meran/Merano. Authentic Törggelen takes place from early October, beginning with the "Keschtnfeuer" and continuing with a great supporting program until the end of November, when the festive Advent period begins.

Over 20 Buschenschank taverns will invite guests to the opening party, featuring music and traditional delicacies, while guided tours will lead through farms and chestnut groves.

Numerous tastings of wines, schnapps and the lightly-fermented grape most known as "Sußer" will be held during the Törggele season. A wide variety of local delicacies associated with the harvest season, including meat, vegetables, juices and jam, will satisfy all tastes. Farm visits will also be offered, to enable visitors to see how these products are grown and made.

Then the hosts will light the "Keschtnfeuer" fire and roast the first chestnuts for their guests.

The Authentic Törggelen initiative will kick off on Saturday, October 6, 2018 with the supporting events starting at 6 pm and the "Keschtnfeuer" ritual at 7 pm.

For the Keschtnfeuer and the subsequent Törggelen, reservations at the individual farms are required. Find more information about the participating inns and taverns and registration details at the following page.
